Good news in Yushu

Solar panels and computers for the disaster area of Yushu

A strong earthquake (6.9 on the Richter magnitude scale) and several aftershocks hit the Tibetan District of Yushu on April 14 2010. Together with local partners Norlha implemented a reconstruction project. Norlha is currently collaborating with the women association Shem Women's Group whose purpose is to support women's equality and the development of the needy communities. Being sensitive to gender issues, Norlha is keen to take part in two projects carried out by this NGO.

The first project, 35 solar panels were installed in a village hit by the earthquake. Many families are still living under a tent without electricity or heating. In this harsh climate, the winter is particularly cold. The village is under reconstruction and the process is far from being over. Power cuts frequently happen. Womens' everyday work (like washing and cooking) is thus even harder. As of January 2012, solar panels enable 35 families whose situation is precarious to enjoy electricity, and thus light, heating, radio and easier cooking conditions.

The second project consists of providing 15 computers and a projector to a primary school class in a town of the Yushu disctrict. Following the earthquake, teaching material is lacking and teachers are writing on a blackboard. This is a limited teaching method and  pupils get quite bored! Those children don't know how to use a computer and they are looking forward to learning basic computer skills. Computers make it easier for the professors to teach, they represent a window on the world and strengthen the school programme. Furthermore the woman organizing this project is assuming a role through which the girls can identify with a model of professional success and develop confidence in their own abilities.
