The majority of rural women have lost one or more babies in their lifetime and approximately 1 in 6-10 newborns die within the first month of life.

Geography

Sershul (SHIQU, SERXI) is one of the eighteen counties in the Kandze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in the north westernmost tip of Sichuan Province.

It has an area of over 25,100 square kilometres, an average elevation of 4,200 meters; and is predominantly nomadic grassland.

The population of Shiqu County is approximately 68,000; there are 49,100 herdsmen, representing 77.6% of the population.

Ganzi County has an area of 7,350 km2 and a mean elevation of 3,410 meters.

The population is 55,550; there are approximately 19,000 herdsmen.
