Our partners, the Sershul Gompa Clinic staff will continue to support orphans and old people with medicine, food, clothing and shelter; Norlha will continue to support them in this regard. Most of Sershul Gompa Clinic staff is still in Yushu treating the injured people; 600-700 people were treated in the early days.

Hundreds of tents, a medical team, medicine for more than 100,000 yuans have been brought from Sershul, as well as large quantities of donated food, clothes, etc.

Furthermore, the region Sershul was also hit, though less violently than Yushu / Kyegudo area; a hundred families have been rescued and sheltered. Given the proximity of Sershul area, 800 monks and residents of this city were the first to arrive on the spot on the day of the earthquake and to provide support and comfort.

The South China Morning Post writes:
"There are 1000 Monks from Sertar Lharung Gar alone, plus almost as many from Sershul, besides other teams. They are giving cash sums to victims as well as food and supplies. (...)
Since the quake, crimson-robed monks have been handing out food, water and other essential items around the town. They have also helped rescue survivors and dug out bodies. Yesterday, they began handing out cash - 200 yuan (US$30) to each family who had lost their home or a loved one."
South China Morning Post, Apr 20, 2010

April 17th:
Early reports estimate that 85% of buildings destroyed and there are several thousands people wounded. The population has moved out of town to avoid landslides in the event of aftershocks in the coming days. Furthermore, the dam near Yushu threat to yield and flooding the city.

The situation of the already poor population without this cataclysm, is precarious. Countless families have lost everything, people are in the street and the cold, without food, without water nor heating means. The average temperature is below zero in April.

Our partners are already there to help. The devastated province is near the Himalayan region of Sershul (Sichuan Prov.) where Norlha leads several development aid projects since 2006 in the education, health, environment and sanitation fields. Following several requests from our various field partners Norlha will find and deliver the urgently needed aid.

Our partner are already on the spot, including doctors and nurses from Sershul Gompa Clinic, are on hand to provide assistance, medicine, food, tents and other equipment. A team of volunteers also formed especially tosupport the numerous children who became orphan.

  • medicines and health care workers
  • emergency shelter, food
  • warm clothes and blankets
It seems that sanitation issues and access to drinking water are two priorities which we should also quickly address.
